Best Indoor Photo Spots in Houston
Every Houston photographer has the same story. You book the session six weeks out. You scout the location. You coordinate four schedules, a wardrobe, and a hair and makeup appointment. Then, ninety minutes before call time, the sky turns the color of a bruise and does what Houston skies do. Or it is August, the heat index is 108, and asking anyone to stand outside in formalwear stops being a creative decision and becomes a medical one. That is why we keep an indoor list. Not as a backup — as a real category, with looks you cannot get outdoors at any time of year. Historic architecture. Museum halls. Industrial warehouses. Light you control completely instead of light you negotiate with. Here are the ten we actually use, with what it takes to book each one. #1 The Julia Ideson Building If we could only shoot indoors at one place in Houston, it would be here. Opened in 1926 and designed by Ralph Adams Cram, the Ideson Building served as Houston’s main library for fifty years. It is Spanish Renaissance from top to bottom — hand-carved wood ceilings, wrought-iron staircases, arched windows two stories tall, and a courtyard garden tucked off the side. Three floors, all of them photogenic. The staircases are the reason to come. They give you height, they give you leading lines, and they give you movement — a subject walking down a wrought-iron stair in window light is a photograph that works for engagements, senior portraits, and executive headshots equally well. The tall windows throw enormous, soft, directional light across the floors for most of the day. The booking: This is not a walk-in. Photo and video shoots require an advance reservation and a rental agreement through HPL Special Events, and you check in at the lobby security desk with your confirmation and payment receipt. Access covers the exterior and interior public spaces, but not the Auditorium or Exhibit Hall without specific written permission. Sessions do not get exclusive use of the building — other patrons still have full access. Courtyard-only shoots must also be scheduled and paid for; they are not free. Commercial shoots require additional planning and may cost more. Contact [email protected] or call 832-393-1646. Pro Tip: Book a late-morning or mid-afternoon weekday slot and work the west-facing windows on the upper floor. Because you do not get exclusive use, weekends and evening event nights are the worst possible timing — you will be working around foot traffic in every frame. A quiet Tuesday is worth more than a perfectly lit Saturday. #2 POST Houston (The Interior) We put Skylawn on our outdoor list. The inside of the building is a completely different animal, and honestly the more interesting one for photography. The former Barbara Jordan Post Office is 550,000 square feet of raw industrial volume — exposed structure, enormous open atriums, and a set of sculptural spiral staircases that have become some of the most photographed objects in the city. Add the neon signage throughout the market hall and you get something no other Houston location offers: hard architectural geometry lit by saturated color. This is our recommendation for anyone whose brief is modern, bold, or not like everyone else’s photos. Creative professionals, musicians, brand and marketing work, engagement sessions for couples who would rather not stand in a garden. The booking: Amateur photography is welcome, but permits must be requested in advance for any professional session — engagements, weddings, graduations, advertising, publications, podcasts, and any drone use, inside or out. Email [email protected]. Check the events calendar too; POST programs heavily. Pro Tip: The neon is the light source, not a background element. Shoot it after dark when the ambient daylight from the atriums drops out and the color takes over — you get magenta and cyan rim light for free. Bring a fast lens, keep your ISO honest, and let the color grade itself. Fighting the neon with strobe defeats the entire point of being here. #3 Silver Street Studios at Sawyer Yards Twenty thousand square feet of former beer distribution warehouse, converted in 2013, now one of Houston’s busiest event and commercial shoot spaces. What you are buying here is volume and control. Concrete floors, exposed trusses, industrial windows, and enough open square footage to build a set, run a full lighting rig, and shoot a car if that is what the job requires. It is the closest thing Houston has to a proper soundstage that also looks like something on camera. The surrounding Sawyer Yards campus adds working artist studios and painted exteriors, so a single booking can produce several very different looks. The booking: Rental only, through Sawyer Yards. Silver Street books an estimated sixty public and private events a year, including commercial shoots, so inquire well ahead — their calendar fills months out. Pro Tip: This is a lighting location, not a natural-light location. The payoff is that nothing outside can ruin your day: no weather, no crowds, no permit window closing at 5 p.m. If you are shooting a campaign, a lookbook, or anything where you need the same light in hour four that you had in hour one, this is where it happens. #4 Houston Museum of Natural Science Four floors of natural science halls on the northern edge of Hermann Park, and one of the most visually distinctive interiors in the city. The Morian Hall of Paleontology gives you mounted skeletons in dramatic, theatrical lighting. The Cullen Hall of Gems and Minerals is a dark room full of illuminated cases — deep blacks with jewel-toned light sources, which is a portrait environment most photographers never think to use. And the Cockrell Butterfly Center is a three-story glass rainforest with a waterfall and live butterflies, which for family and children’s sessions is close to unbeatable. The booking: Personal photography and videography is encouraged. Anything intended for professional use goes through [email protected] — contact them before you book clients. Flash photography is prohibited everywhere in the

Ways To Make Your Mother Feel Special on Your Wedding Day
It’s Mother’s Day this weekend and we’re celebrating the precious moments to share with your mom on your wedding day! Sure, it’s your day, but it’s a milestone for her as she watches her child leap into the married life. Our team of Houston wedding photographers composed this article to share the inspiration from our brides that adds a little appreciation to your mother to make your wedding day extra special! Getting Ready The moments spent before the ceremony are the moments she will remember too. Don’t get flustered if she’s being a typical mom, let her help you get ready! Something Borrowed As the tradition of mothers passing down their wedding gown is decreasing, you can still find ways to incorporate her special day into yours. If she’s willing to make a cut in her dress, you can easily stitch a small piece to the inside of your wedding dress! Or use the fabric as extra detailing around your bouquet. If she isn’t ready to manipulate her wedding dress, you can always wear her wedding veil or a special piece of her jewelry. You need something borrowed anyway, right? Let Her Walk You Down the Aisle In typical tradition, the father-of-the-bride walks the bride down the aisle. Why not ask your mom to tag along? She’s giving you away just as much as your father, and it still shows the official tradition of receiving a blessing from the bride’s family to the groom. First Look Photos A lot of newlyweds are capturing first look photos (see more trends to copy in 2018) to capture the first time the groom sees his bride. This is also a great idea to do with your mother! Before you put the finishing touches of your look together, tell her to step out of the room, then go surprise her when you’re ready! Dance With Her There’s a first dance, a father-daughter dance, and a mother-son dance. Grooms, dedicate a special song to your mother as you invite her to dance. Brides, you can have a mother-daughter dance as well! Sharing this moment will make her evening even more special. Every day is a chance to honor all mothers! They’ve helped us in all stages of life and supported us along the way. Mother’s at weddings, we salute you, for your kindness, your beauty, and for your love for your children. Happy Mother’s Day to all!
